Our Story

When we moved to Oakland from Germany, we dreamed of opening a café—a warm, inviting neighborhood spot where people could linger over steaming coffee, handpicked produce, and freshly baked goods. In 2022, that dream became a reality with the opening of Im Moment, a German phrase meaning "in the moment."

Im Moment is more than just a café; it's a place to pause, relax, and appreciate the beauty of now. Our food and drinks reflect our family’s rich, multicultural heritage, influenced by German, Eritrean, and Italian traditions. Each dish is a personal creation, perfected with love and attention.

We combine German bread with Eritrean spiced fillings and toppings, creating unique offerings like Salami/Cheese Pretzel, Chickpea Brot (Toast), and Habesha Foul served with German bread. Our German rolls are topped with mortadella, salami, or veggie items. Our signature drink, "Asmarino," is a tribute to a popular coffee drink in Eritrea's capital, Asmara. We also make in-house Eritrean honey wine and serve imported Italian Lambrusco, German Riesling, and a selection of German and Eritrean beers.

At Im Moment, we strive to create a space where worries and screens are left at the door, where you can truly be in the moment. We've designed our interior with warm colors, personalized art, and murals that reflect our upbringing, making it feel like home—for us and for you.
